Brigante + Bowfinger + The Escape + Chris Wright + Mr Barbs Reviewed by Martin Stapleton

A young gentleman by the name of Mr Barbs opened the musical fare this evening. Hailing from the east of the county, the first thing I notice is that he has his myspace web site written on a strip of masking tape which is stuck on his guitar. Almost as noticeable is the hairstyle! Long floppy strands cover almost a third of his face. Distinctive yes, but I would think mildly irritating. His face is very deadpan throughout, giving very little away. The unusual practice of using three guitars during the set is also worthy of note. One of these is rather on the small side. This is seen immediately as he changes on the opening "The little things" to the gleaming acoustic 'axe' sported on "In the shadows". "For Georgia" is new, in fact written "only the other day". The undoubted high spot for me has to be "Nights like this". As Mr Barbs so accurately sings "These nights are so very few". "Buckled" could well have been a page torn out of Neil Young's dog eared manual. Yes, it's a fitting finale.
Chris Wright is no stranger to our venue. He confidently strides on stage and, from his physique, he could easily be a middleweight boxer. Powerfully built, his rippling tattooed muscles bulge out of an undersized Burtons T-shirt. Shaven headed with a neatly trimmed beard, his vocal style is a full repertoire of mellow offerings. The rather abrupt end to "I see you standing there" is a tad unsettling, however the chorus driven "Sweet Lily" really hits the mark. Sensing that the love songs are chillin' us out excessively, Chris plays his ace with "Midnight dream". Knowingly he declares "This one will wake you up!" and he's right, it did! With the job completed, "I sail the sea" is quite a reflective closure.
Talented young trio The Escape always, I feel, radiate such enormous energy. Although it is clear by this time that the vast majority of the audience have come out to party with the headliners, the lads thankfully kept to their principle aim. Blending their precocious talent with the ability to create an innovative sound, it tries to put a new twist on the indie-rock formula. Melodic guitar riffing aplenty, it drives their well crafted songs forward to totally satisfy. They include a couple of new ones, namely "Height" and "Time of day", which I am sure will prove just as popular as their older material.
Prior to their appearance tonight, Bowfinger's lovable vocalist Ed reflected on his band and Esquires in general. He told me how much they enjoyed playing here which, in various guises, amounts to some eighteen years. They have been at the hub of Esquires history. It sits well with him and the band who have been very inactive during the year, this being only their second gig of 2009. The hiatus has been kind and the boys are certainly ready. A couple of new songs are included, of which "Snappy" certainly appears to be perfect for the Bowfinger afficianados. A love of ska is evident. The rhythms are 'bashed out' with such effortless panache. With seventies new wave ethics obeyed, they combine that spiky psyche with a sixties pop sheen. The bevy of popular tunes are still gratefully received.
Since their last Esquires visit at last years Red Stripe music gig, Brigante have undergone a line up change. Luke has taken on vocals and he displays a casual laid back style. It's he who weaves the band into such a cohesive whole. The quartet are beginning to find their feet again. They rock politely with controlled musicianship and a scuffed magnetism. The rebirth of Bgigante has finally begun. An intrigueing mix of "Break it up" and The Ting Tings "Thats not my name" works really well when it shouldn't. The army of Brigante followers justly deserve an encore and duly receive one from a band who tonight enjoyed what they created.

09/11/2007- REVIEW from Esquires gig: 26/10/2007:

Rate of the Day + Dash-Delete + The Sticks + Shapes
Reviewed by Martin Stapleton

It has to be the long-term aim for all our young local bands to eventually gig in some far flung corners of the country, be it London, Cornwall, or even Glasgow. However, for tonights headliners Rate Of The Day, last month saw them travelling to Rovigo in Italy and playing in front of 500 Italian music fans at a local music festival. A truly marvellous experience for Simon, Luke, Chris and Dan who make up this impressively maturing indie band. After Italy, what of their showing tonight? Well, from the haunting intro of 'Through Closed Doors' to the final strains of Millsy's mum's favourite 'Bomber Brown' (!) the set was confident and polished, and for a refreshingly level headed bunch of lads, the lyrical substance matched the ease control of playing.

ROTD showcased a few new songs, of which 'Break It Up' has recently received an airing on local radio. While the awesome vocal resources hit a peak on 'Sellin' This'. The funky blues of 'Taking Part' is a perfect demonstration of their contrasting potential, and the pleasing momentum built up in the set culminates with 'Things To Come'. Sometimes in the past Rate Of the Day's live performance has been a little patchy, but the high expectations they have at times shown were totally fulfilled tonight.

Supporting our musical ambassadors were firstly Dash-Delete, an indie outfit from Aylesbury, Bucks who consist of Ashley Cawell (lead vocals, guitar), Richard Swift (backing vocals, guitar), Jack Brackley (drums) and George Shepherd (bass). It's clearly evident from their Esquires debut that they are a confident bunch, especially on this occasion as they have very little travelling support. The craftily titled 'Mary Le Bone' and the impressively performed 'Benny Boy' are the highspots from a band who, judging from the discussion I had with them post-gig, are aiming very high in their musical direction.

As the evening starts so well, surprisingly it hits the buffers with the appearance of acoustic duo The Sticks who endure a disappointing time. After arriving late they missed out on a soundcheck which seemed to induce a nervous start from which they never really recovered. When midway through they await a stage monitor to be difused, it's highly ironic that their following song is about patience! Perhaps for these Sandy boys its "It feels like we are going nowhere fast" that sums up their overall performance.

Back to indie, and with a sharper name now Luton's Shapes breezed back into Bedford. There's an urgency as they tear through their set with a swift efficiency that begs the question: are these boys in for last orders at The Duke of Clarence (Luton pub)? Especially when the shout of "1-2-3-4" strikes up for 'Fistfights at Midnight'. Their stage persona always scores top marks, and with some mates travelling to it adds to a good atmosphere.

How things work out. Today I asked Scronin to sing a song I’d written in G major. He told me to go F**K myself, and that I should write songs in C major. After an arm wrestling competition in which I lost, we decided to scrap the song. My plans are to sell the song now to a boy band or equivalent. I’m thinking the boys from Totally Boyband could do with the assistance. (Quick note: I only lost due to the heavy weights I’d been pumping with Kung Fu Charlie earlier in the day. I’m usually dynamite at arm wrestling. My favourite film is ‘Over the Top’ starring Sylvester Stallone.

On a lighter note Millsy and Pags enjoyed a wonderful shopping spree. Pags bought a dazzling military outfit he is insisting on wearing for 364 days a year (he still wears a pair of Bermuda shorts on Pancake day) and Millsy bought an oversized cantaloupe from Bedford Market. He insists it’s a present for a distant relative, but we all know him better than that.

After the new launch of the Rate of the Day website the public have been queuing in their droves to have a look. With tracks now uploaded their has been widespread interest at how Rate of the Day sound in the studio. One well-respected lady was dazzled…saying that the vocalist reminder her of “a young Peter Gabriel”.

A well-known Bedford journalist tried to contact Rate of the Day frontman Simon Cronin but unfortunately he was unavailable for comment. The journalist did however manage to catch Rate of the Day Head of Security Pietro Ariano. When asked what he thought to the comments of Simon Cronin sounding like a young Peter Gabriel he replied, “Is that the fella who visits Mary in the Bible?” When informed by the journalist that this was in fact the Archangel Gabriel his response was “Do you smell what the Rock is cookin’?” After a raised eyebrow and a long pause the journalist retreated where sources say she was spotted purchasing 6 cans of Super Tennants and a 2-litre bottle of White Lighting at a local off license. One can only assume she planned to make an ultimate snakebite.
